The Scope
As you can see, the rifle scope is mounted on a bracket on the left side of the gun. On a right-handed gun, the expanded cartridge is ejected out to the right. Coincidentally, all of the empty casings found were to the right of the 'sniper's nest'.
Having a rifle scope mounted as above creates a problem. If lined up perfectly straight left to right, the gun will fire to the right. So, the cross hairs must be aligned to the right to compensate. Usually, a marksman will pick a distance of 100 to 200 yards to sight in the rifle scope. Let's say 200 yards for argument's sake. If Oswald had sighted in the scope at 200 yards, then the gun would shoot to the left at 100 yards. So, at any distance less than the sighted distance, the rifle will fire to the left. Any distance greater than the sighted distance, the gun will fire to the right. Any shooter can become familiar with this by firing a few rounds at different distances.
